Mesmerized by Amazon's digital charm and explosive growth in sales, few have looked closely at the animal itself. It screams for scrutiny because it, more than any other single entity, has had the infinite hubris to envision a brave new, computer-driven oligarchic order for our society—then has proceeded to assemble it. Amazon smells today’s mass employment desperation, preys on it, and thrives on it. That is the “magic” behind its super-cheap prices and super-efficient delivery system.
