"We the people of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." What a paragraph! This sparse, 52-word opening of our Constitution did not merely launch a fledgling nation--but a bold experiment in democratic idealism.

LEGISLATION: Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) is sponsoring H.R. 730—The Human Dignity Act. It would provide the U.S. minimum wage for workers in the Commonwealth, make sweatshop owners comply with our immigration laws, require that a Made-in-the-USA label can only be used by factories complying with all U.S. labor laws. Call the congressional switchboard (202-224-3121), ask for your lawmakers, and tell them to support H.R. 730.
AGITATION: The Gap is an industry leader and does the most business in the Mariana Islands. Contact The Gap (800-333-7899) and tell them to support H.R. 730 and to stop trying to fool us consumers with Made-in-the-USA labels on sweatshop garments from the Northern Mariana Islands.
